History of Cave of Hira in Jabal Al Noor

The Cave of Hira is found on Jabal Al Noor(the Mountain of Light)near Mecca. It marks the place of Islamic revelation which was a major turning point in the life of the Prophet (PBUH) and marked the start of Islam as a religion.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)  often spent time alone in it and he received the first revelation. The situation in Mecca is very terrible at that time. Idol worship was very common along with social issues and negative behavior.

First Revelation on Prophet (PBUH)

He was very troubled because of these issues. He visited the cave to think and reflect on his life. It was an important time for him as he prepared for the message he was about to receive from God.

Something incredible happened In 610 CE when he was in the Cave of Hira during one of his quiet moments. The Angel Jibril (Gabriel) appeared before him and asked him to read or recite. The Prophet (PBUH) replied that he couldn’t do it as he could not read. The angel kept urging him to read until the first verses of the Quran were revealed as follows:

“Read in the name of your Lord who created. He created man from a clot (a piece of thickened blood). Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous – Who taught by the pen – Taught man that which he knew not.”

(Surah Al-Alaq, 96:1-5)

These verses mark the start of Muhammad’s (PBUH) mission as a prophet. This event is the start of the final message to humanity from God. This is how the Quran started.
